A real success without a doubt: Minister Dr. Sándor Fazekas, Hungary, Federal Minister Dr. Christian Schmidt, Germany and other high-ranking representatives of the agricultural ministries from all over the twelve partner countries of the PeaceBread-project met on September 22nd and 23rd, twelve years after most of the partner countries joined the EU, with more than 40 civic representatives of the PeaceBread forum “Peace and Agriculture” at Szarvas.
We are glad to inform you that on the 6th of April our European initiative had a big step further. It was three years ago when we join the PeaceBread Project and now the Hungarian PeaceBread Association (“Magyar Békekenyér Egyesület”) was launched in the beautiful town of Szarvas. Our new association will promote the well-known objectives in Hungary and beyond.
The Harvest Crown, handed over by Dr. Sandor Fazekas, Hungarian Minister of Rural Development, to Association PeaceBread at Conference "Peace and Agriculture" on 30.9.2014 found a honor place at the local Heimvolkshochschule Seddiner See.
Many guests got already first hand information about PeaceBread project.
19.09.2014: Mihály Jancsó reports about a very nice initiative:
Researcher's Night is a science festival in Europe to bring research closer to the people. We have many fascinating programs in the NARIC and this year PeaceBread will be part of them. We are planning to draw attention of visitors to the philosophy of PeaceBread Project.
Furthermore, classes from the local schools will have the opportunity to take part in the rye sowing. Each classes will have their own PeaceBread rye plots, they can see and nurse the rye plants from the sowing to the harvest.
Dr. Mihály Jancsó, who is in charge of the PeaceBread rye in Hungary wrote on 06.08.2014:
"We are gladly informing you that the rye harvest was successful in Szarvas, Hungary. The German variety 'Bolerus' and the Hungarian variety 'Varda' have good yield although the weather in our region was extremely rainy in this July (more than 200 mm). After carefully cleaning of the rye we will send it to Berlin to make the PeaceBread of Europe."
The National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre (NARIC) was founded on 1 January, 2014 in Hungary. The NARIC was established via integration of 13 research institutions in the field of agriculture and food industry.
Mr. Nandor BEKI, Secretary at the Embassy of Hungary in Berlin, informed about Hungarian delegation to PeaceBread conference:
The Minister of Rural Development of Hungary Dr. Sandor Fazekas will attend the Conference and the Ceremonial act, which will take place in the period from 29th of September to 1st of October 2014 in Berlin. Minister Fazekas will be accompanied by Mr. Mihály Babák, Mayor of the city of Szarvas, Ádám Kovács, Head of Department of International Relations in Ministry of Rural Development, Mr Attila Nagy, Managing Director of Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI) in Szarvas, Mihály Jancsó, Research Fellow at Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI) in Szarvas and Mr. Nandor BEKI, Secretary at the Embassy of Hungary in Berlin.
The Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation(HAKI), based in Szarvas (Hungary), is the partner for growing the Hungarian “PeaceBread” rye.
The rye is grown next to Hungarian rye varieties on a trial field of the Institute, the research site in Szarvas featuring one of the largest and oldest lysimeter complexes in Europe.

Here are some new pictures from our rye fields. The photos were taken on 23rd of October. This is the national memory day of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight of 1956. This is a national holiday since 1989. In the year of 1956 the first major revolt against the Soviet control in Central and Eastern Europe was done by the Hungarian People.
Mihály JANSCÓ, Research Fellow / Research Group Leader in the Irrigation Management and Rice Research Group of Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI) in Szarvas - our Hungarian project partner in PeaceBread project - informs about the details of this symbolic day of German Unity:
"Next to the rye variety from Berlin a Hungarian bred rye variety called 'Varda' was also sown on this.
Another step on the way of rye growth in middle and south eastern European countries and Germany for PeaceBread initiative: Today we got information, that rye seeds arrived in Czech Republic and Hungary.
Today Peace Bread seeds are shipped to our partners from Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania. Shipment in next countries will follow soon.
Today, a letter of the Hungarian Minister fur Rural Development, Dr Sandor FAZEKAS, arrived at the PeaceBread office as personal confirmation of his appreciation of and the participation of Hungary in the “PeaceBread” project.
Minister FAZEKAS emphasised: „Hungary is proud of its active and distinguished role with regard to the fall of the Berlin Wall and looking forward to its particular participation in the PeaceBread activities next year.”
As requested by the Hungarian Embassy in Berlin, the general manager of “PeaceBread”, Dr. Gibfried SCHENK, sends a letter to Minister Sandor FAZEKAS and explains the project.
